I love researching Ukrainian type design heritage, so sometimes I create lettering based on the works of Ukrainian graphic artists of the last century to understand their styles and potential for reproduction, rethinking, and use in modern contexts. Here are some personal and commercial works.

1. Magazine cover

Jacques Hnizdovsky (1948)

2. Different letterings

Mykhailo Dmytrenko, 1956

Arystarkh Kobtsev, 1914

Roman Chorniy, 1938

3. Stencil & the City

Stencil lettering inspired by a Ukrainian book cover (1929) by Borys Kriukov and the paving stone of Vozdvyzhenka (the historical district in Kyiv). The mission was to highlight the ambiguity of clumsy modern imitation of historical architecture and problems with the UX of this place.

4. Album cover

This is an art cover of a wonderful and a bit naive anti-war song by my friend Andriy Savdeyev written in anxious anticipation of the imminent war, but with the hope that it will not happen. It's called Garna Novyna (Good News). I finished working on these custom letters on February 22, 2022. The war began on February 24. But still, this song is released.

While creating letters, I was inspired by the 70s, the works of Ukrainian graphic artists, and especially by the works of Mykhailo Dmytrenko. Also, I was inspired by the vibe of letters created by Austrian designer Othmar Motter in 1972. By the way, the contrast in -N- is my conscious decision (rhythm matters). But the main inspiration was the sound and words of the song, some subtle contrast between naive tenderness and background acute anxiety, which I wanted to reflect in this lettering.

5. Header & Article

Header in Ukrainian for Alphabettes created during the war and russian invasion of Ukraine. It was also supported by my article about Ukrainian type design heritage in the modern context. You can read it here.
